Definition

Prostatic abscess is an advanced form or complication of acute prostatitis caused by a progressive inflammatory/infectious process that spreads throughout the prostate.  This rare entity usually occurs in immunocompromised patients.

Evaluation by ultrasound (transrectal) is useful for diagnosis and surgical planning.

Treatment consists of transrectal drainage with intravenous antibiotics

Prostate Abscess

The CT scan of the pelvis is from a 63 year old man with a history of fever and pain. A fluid containing ovoid structure (green arrow b) in the prostate is surrounded by a region of hyperemia. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of a prostatic abscess.
